Ayrton Senna tried an Indy style helmet before the 1994 Formula 1 season.

He never used it in a race because he did not like the sound of the wind and the shape of this helmet.

Pictured here is the original BELL VORTEX TYPE SS PENSKE 93/94 helmet worn by Ayrton at Paul Ricard testing on 2nd of March 1994 with Williams FW16.

(currently being sold at Silverstone Auctions)

Ayrton Senna da Silva, 21 March 1960 – 1 May 1994
He would turn 54 today.
It was the steering column breaking that caused his fatal crash in Imola 1994. In the on-board footage you see the front tyres suddenly straighten up in a left-hand corner, sending the car straight ahead. Afterwards you can see Ayrton moving the steering hard to the left, but the front tyres don’t move and still point straight ahead.
